As Sunbathers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Image Captures Beach Patrol Running ‘All Out’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, describes the renowned coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, along with numerous others in the area, detected cracking sounds ringing out across the community.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was too light and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Exiting her home, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the road, conversing with a couple who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up from behind. The person was a rescuer, sprinting to Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. It was just him heading in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to get away from, while holding that large equipment and without footwear … He’s running towards something that surely every fibre in your being would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort racing.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The photo that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many instances of courage in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, officers and paramedics treating numerous the injured.

Collective Response and Support

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to come out of the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the site of the attack becoming a makeshift treatment center. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including entering the water to assist people needing help.

Following the tragedy, statements of appreciation were shared. An online statement shared gratitude for the individuals who exhibited that “compassion will always conquer darkness”.

The group of lifeguards published a statement, noting they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful words and support. We are deeply moved by the care shown towards our responders,” the team wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those affected.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many full-time lifeguards, said that the staff rose to the occasion from the instant the incident started through to late that night.

“There have been so many emotional stories, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” commented a local official.

“The team demonstrate dedication every day in keeping our world-famous coastlines secure for visitors, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the terror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have observed in the presence of such hatred.”
