Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
