Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
